Santorini
Santorini, is the southern island of Cyclades situated 130 NM from Pireus (port of Athens). It is reachable via sea or air. It's a 35 minute flight from Athens airport (4 flights per day) or it can be reached directly from many European cities.

![]() |
The volcanic past of the island has formed a landscape that comes in contrast with the peaceful white-and-blue Cycladic architecture. The volcanic eruptions of the island (first recorded around 1500BC and last at 1959AC) have marked not only the landscape but also the course of its history. The island, first known to be inhabited during Neolithic times, had developed an important civilization related to the Minoans of Crete but also in contact with the rest of Greece, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt. The volcanic activity resulting in a very strong eruption around 1500BC put an end to that civilization. The citadel situated at Akrotiri was fully covered by volcanic ash and preserved to our days. The island was reinhabited later on (1300BC) by Phoenicians and Lakedemonian (Greeks of the mainland, 1100BC) and from that time followed the history of the rest of Greece (Hellenistic, Byzantine period). Later on, Santorini has been occupied by the Venetians and the Turks until the Greek Revolution of 1821. Each history period left its marks on the island. Archaeological sites (Akrotiri, Ancient Thera.) churches and museums (Prehistoric, Archeological, Naval, Folclore, Gizi) demonstrate its rich history and culture. |
Social Events
The social program of the meeting includes a visit to the excavations at Akrotiri (ancient city buried under the volcano ashes ) and an idyllic sunset cruise on a sailboat.

Pre-conference tour
Specially organized for the conference participants (at extra cost ) with one overnight at Athens and two overnights at Mykonos island, ending at Santorini on 20/09/05. Schedule:
17/09/05 ATHENS
Participants arrive at Athens individually.
In the afternoon meet and greet by our representative and start an orientation
tour passing the new and old Olympic stadium before dropping off at the foot
of the Acropolis. Visit the Acropolis with a qualified guide and listen the
history at the center of the city. In the evening enjoy dinner at the Plaka
area at the foot of the Acropolis. This is the ancient quarter of Athens, flooded
with Greeks and foreigners every moment, day or night. Pedestrian malls are
lined with shops of all descriptions, taverns, bars and restaurants and as the
night falls the heat goes up in night-clubs, discos and bouzouki halls. Athens
is famous for its history, culture, the sunny cloudless days but also for its
night life which lasts all night long. Overnight at a hotel in Athens.
18/09/05 ATHENS - MYKONOS
Early morning transfer to Piraeus Port to board a Hi Speed Catamaran to Mykonos
island for a 3 hours trip.
Mykonos: The quintessential Greek island of white cubic houses and blue seas,
the so-called playground of Europe. Meet and greet by our local representative
and transfer by coach to your hotel.
Rest of the day is free for leisure: to enjoy the hotel facilities or swim at
one of the famous sandy beaches of Paradise or Super Paradise, Elia, Psarou,
Agrari etc.
This evening get into the spirit with traditional Greek music and dancing on
your own.
After dinner explore the bars, pubs, discos , bouzouki bars: all these will
entertain those strong enough to carry on into the small hours. Or shop until
after midnight in designer boutiques and jewellery emporiums lining the winding
alleys of the picturesque town. Wander in the tiny alleyways of the town and
look out for the pelican, the mascot of Mykonos.
19/09/05 MYKONOS - DELOS ISLAND
Departure from hotel by private bus and escort to the port in order to embark
the 09:00 boat to Delos (duration of journey about 40 minutes).
Arrival at Delos island, meet with our guide for a sightseeing tour to one of
the most prestigious religious centers of antiquity and now one of the most
significant archaeological sites in the country. Delos was regarded as a sacred
island – the birthplace of the legendary twins Apollo and Artemis and
was the island chosen as treasury and safe of Delian League during the Persian
wars.
The ruins of this ancient community includes, a theatre, a stadium, the famous
Sanctuary of Apollo and even the Sacred lade where legend places the birth of
the twins.
After our sightseeing of Delos we return to Myconos with the 12.20 boat.
